Linda McRae: MUSIC/LYRICS/VIDEO
Carve It To The Heart
I got the idea for this song from an old minstrel tune called Carve That Possum I heard Clark Beuhling perform during a workshop at the American Banjo Camp in Washington State.
CARVE IT TO THE HEART
My blood red rose turned to rust
Shot with a bullet from your silvery tongue
Like a glowing cross on a prairie night
When old fears linger on
You don’t know what you’ve done
Love can’t live with so much pain
When old fears linger on
How much longer must I wait?
For you to make your mark
Carve it to the heart
Shop worn lies from purse-string lips
Careen uphill into the wind
Troubles run blind in a terrified mind
Then hide in the darkest parts
Till you don’t know what you’ve done
Love can’t live with so much pain
Carved on the darkest part
I can no longer wait
For you to make your mark
Carve it to the heart
Forge a padlock for my heart
And a chain of Herculean link
I don’t want to love again
If pain is all it brings
Carve it to the heart
My blood red rose turned to rust
Shot with a bullet from your silvery tongue
